Lead is the craftsman's choice for weathering the awkward junctions of a roof — valleys, chimneys, abutments and dormers. Done well it lasts for generations; done badly it splits and leaks within years. We use the correct lead code and thickness for each detail and dress it properly, so it moves with the building and stays weather-tight.

How it works

Identify the detail
We assess each junction and select the correct lead code and method for its size and exposure.
Prepare the chase
Brickwork joints are raked out to receive the lead, or soakers are set out to the tile gauge.
Cut & dress
Lead is cut, folded and dressed snug to the substrate so water sheds cleanly off it.
Secure & seal
Flashings are fixed and pointed in, with allowance for thermal movement so the lead does not split.

Leadwork — your questions answered
Why is lead used instead of sealant?
Properly installed lead lasts decades and moves with the building. Sealants and tapes are short-term fixes that fail within a few years.
What is a lead code?
Lead is sold in thicknesses called codes. We use the correct code for each detail — heavier lead for valleys and long runs, lighter lead for soakers.
Why does old lead split?
Usually because it was too thin for the job, over-fixed so it cannot move, or corroded by run-off. We size and fix it correctly to prevent this.
Do you do lead welding?
Yes. Where a detail needs a welded joint — such as a box gutter or outlet — we weld it for a permanent, watertight seam.
Can you replace just the flashing?
Often yes. If the surrounding roof is sound we can renew the leadwork around a chimney or valley without replacing the whole roof.
